Monday afternoon I hiked over to 5th avenue to watch the Columbus Day Parade march uptown towards 72nd street. There were marching bands, police men on motorcycles, and even a horde of bagpipers. It's probably the first time I ever celebrated Columbus Day, and honestly, I was just looking for something fun to do that afternoon. But it was surprisingly wonderful. I'm pretty sure I have very little to zero actual Italian blood in me, but there I was, getting all emotional and feeling patriotic as I watched people waving their Italian flags and singing their Italian songs. It's nice to be surrounded by a group of people who are all passionate about something, especially when that something is home. Happy (belated) Columbus Day!
